Hierarchy of Needs : A theory created by psychologist Abraham Maslow in which human's needs are arranged in an order or ranked in a hierarchy. This hierarchy can be extended to consumer behavior and used to explain why customers purchase products. Trends may be explained by the perceived benefits of a product, the reasoning for purchasing, as well as the social connotations associated with the product, among others. Maslow's hierarchy includes safety, social/love and belonging, esteems, physiological, and self-actualization needs.
